Parisist embarked on some art openings last night in the 19 Arr. organized by the www.fetart.org.
The first stop was a bizarre experience. Basically it was an artist who showed her paintings in a hotel room at Caf?u Lit. The cleverly designed minimalist room was a lot more interesting than the ho -hum paintings and found ourselves much more curious about how all the gadgets in the room worked. We had a nice conversation about ex-pat living in Europe with Linda McCue the Canadian born artist who lives in Hamburg, but felt bad about not being able bring ourselves to tell her how much we liked her work.
Next stop was Cosmic Galerie, a well-established contemporary gallery of young artists. The show had the winners of the 2007 Altadis Prize, a prize that rewards artist from Spain& France. Artists included were Manu Arregui, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Sophie Dubosc, Florentine & Alexandre Lamarche-Ovize, Miki Leal and Juan L?. It was lively and crowded with lots of 20 something year olds and the show against the electric white walls and fluorescent lights was strong and stimulating.
La Generale, the last gallery we visited, was a cacophonous, smoky experience. It?s actually an almost block long industrial building with artist?s studios and galleries. There was a live rock band performance and the gallery was packed to the gills with smokers. Both were so distracting that we could barely take in the art. However, we were disturbed by the chilling mural of Osama Bin Laden that if you looked closely was composed of thousands of stamps bearing the date September 11, 2001. We headed to the upper floors and were able to appreciate the rest of the show now that our lungs and our ears were not clogged, but were disappointed in the mediocre and derivative work.
Although it was a fun night out, Parisist overall was not overly impressed with the supposedly happening Bellville art scene.
